Published in 1972 as Volume 2 of the Texas A&M University Oceanographic Studies, Contributions on the Physical Oceanography of the Gulf of Mexico is a collection of scientific research examining the physical processes that shape one of North America’s most important marine environments.

Edited by L. R. A. Capurro of UNESCO’s Department of Oceanography and Texas A&M University and Joseph L. Reid of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the volume represents an important period in the development of modern ocean science. Its contributors brought together research on the Gulf of Mexico at a time when improved instrumentation, computing, and large-scale oceanographic programs were rapidly changing scientists’ understanding of ocean circulation and physical marine systems.

The book is particularly interesting today as a historical record of how researchers understood the Gulf more than half a century ago. The Gulf of Mexico would subsequently become a major focus of research into ocean circulation, hurricanes, marine ecology, climate, offshore industry, and human impacts on marine environments, making earlier scientific surveys such as this useful snapshots of the field's development.
