Ever felt like your life was being written by someone else? Now you can fight for your own narrative with Death of the Author, a unique 1-2 player tarot RPG about a character battling for agency against the wishes of their very own author!
This captivating game can be played either solo or with a friend, unfolding over the course of 2-4 hours. All you'll need to play is a deck of tarot cards and a way to record your unfolding story – no prior familiarity with tarot is required, so don't you worry!
Gameplay revolves around drawing cards for Scene Prompts, which describe scenes as dictated by your unseen Author. But here's where your agency kicks in: your Character then gets a chance to modify these scene prompts, actively changing the story as you go! In each Chapter, your Character can use one Reversal (flipping a card to receive a different Scene Prompt) and one Defiance (completely rewriting the underlined part of a Scene Prompt). However, beware! Each time you dare to change the narrative, you risk drawing the attention of the Author, who might just choose to retaliate by rewriting the Scene themselves. It's a thrilling, meta-narrative tug-of-war for control of your own destiny!
Death of the Author is a clever hack of the acclaimed Anamnesis, twisting its original mechanics in new and surprising ways to deliver a truly unique RPG experience. This insightful game comes in a 44-page book (including covers), ready to challenge your perception of storytelling.
