Burr puzzles have been astounding and confounding master puzzlers for ages, and there are many variants that all circle back to the idea of an interlocking puzzle. The Diamond #33 Puzzle is a Burr made up of 33 non-identical, wooden pieces that mesh to form a 3D diamond. There is a central piece deceptively disguised in the design that serves as a key to unlocking the sculpture. The first challenge is “shattering” the diamond. Then, the real struggle is to reconstruct the shape to its former glory, which proves difficult due to the unique intricacies in each piece. Burr puzzles prove difficult to visualize spatially due to the presence of gaps within the structure, meaning that even the finished product is not completely solid all the way through. Once you’ve solved the Diamond #33, it makes a lovely decoration to display on a bookshelf or coffee table for others to enjoy.
