This specimen is a fossilized tooth from an extinct species of stingray, a marine animal recognized for its unique flattened body and elongated tail. The tooth’s morphology is distinct, demonstrating a flat and plate- like structure which is characteristic of stingrays, and reflective of their durophagous diet, primarily consisting of hard-shelled organisms like mollusks and crustaceans.
This tooth exhibits a polygonal shape with striations and ridges evident on the occlusal, or chewing surface, features that facilitated in the crushing and grinding of prey. As stingrays continuously replaced their teeth, this fossil is a testament to that biological process.
This fossilized stingray tooth provides key insights into the paleoecology of ancient marine environments, contributing to our understanding of past marine biodiversity, dietary habits, and evolutionary adaptations. Additionally, the well-preserved state of this tooth offers valuable data for stratigraphic correlation and dating of sedimentary rock layers.
Two to Three prehistoric stingray teeth displayed in an acrylic case.
A perfect addition for you fossil collection.
