Established in 1910, Glacier National Park was created to protect the glacially carved ecosystem, home to once 150 active glaciers and 25 active glaciers today. The park is within the larger physical region extending across the U.S/ Canadian border called, “Crown of the Continent.” This larger area has been referred to by different names by the indigenous tribes native to the area including the Salish/Kootenai who called the park, “the place where there is a lot of ice,” as well as “Backbone of the World,” by the Blackfeet tribe, whose reservation borders the eastern boundary of the park. This region comprises not only Glacier National Park, but also the Canadian park on its northern border, Waterton Lake National Park as well as other neighboring wilderness and recreation areas such as Great Bear Wilderness, Flathead National Forest, and the Whitefish Range.
