The huge sunshield allows the main part of the infrared telescope to function at very low temperatures. The primary mirror is made of 18 hexagonal beryllium segments, each covered in a very thin layer of gold. It will be able to observe in long-wavelength visible light through mid-infrared light, allowing it to see very old and distant objects that cannot be observed by Hubble.
