Lunar Phase, the new (Transparent Blue vinyl) LP from iconic alt-pop group Deep Blue Something, is at once a love letter to the genre-agnostic musical landscape of the early 90s and very much of the moment. Perhaps best known for their hit single "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which reached the top 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a global hit in 1995, culminating with a U.K. #1 in 1996, the band's music encompasses a range of styles, from dream-pop to alternative rock, pop, and post-grunge.Formed in Denton, Texas in 1993, Deep Blue Something is composed of Todd Pipes (vocals and bass), his brother Toby Pipes (vocals and lead guitar), Kirk Tatom (guitar and backing vocals), Clay Bergus (guitar and backing vocals), and John Kirtland (drums). The band's debut album, 11th Song, was released in 1993 followed by Home in 1995, Byzantium in 1998 and Deep Blue Something in 2000. Each album showcases the band's songwriting and musicianship, earning them a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim. The support of that fanbase helped lead to a reputation as a dynamic and engaging live band, having toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. They have shared the stage with acts such as Oasis, Collective Soul, Phil Collins, Letters To Cleo, Alanis Morrisette, Adam Ant, Spin Doctors, Everclear, Manic Street Preachers, Cheap Trick, and ZZ Top, and have performed at major festivals such throughout the globe. Over 400 million streams on Spotify alone stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Deep Blue Something's distinctive sound and style. Despite going on hiatus in the early 2000s, the band reunited in 2014 to perform a series of live shows and released the Locust House EP in 2020. The enthusiastic reception the band received stoked their creative fires, and they began recording a new album, Lunar Phase, in 2024. While not a concept album, Lunar Phase was created with a very clear direction in mind. Drawing inspiration from the era in which their musical journey began, Deep Blue Something decided to shape the sound of the record to feel as if it had been recorded in 1992 - in the glory days of jangly underground guitar bands, from which the band had drawn so much inspiration when solidifying their sound. "This was the time of Material Issue, Teenage Fanclub, The Charlatans, and Sugar" says Todd Pipes. "When music seemed to be going everywhere at once - when everyone was waiting to see if The Stone Roses would ever make another record... before grunge took over". Recorded, performed, and produced by the band at Phantom Power Studio in Colleyville, Texas, Lunar Phase captures the effervescent optimism of an era seemingly ripe with infinite musical possibility.
