She licked her lips and his gaze flickered there, capturing the motion before returning to her eyes.
“Back at the bar, you … you called me your wife.”
He smiled and answered unashamed, “I did.”
Her breathing hitched in her throat, making his grin grow.
“B-but that means things,” she murmured.
“Things?” he said, teasing her. “What things?”
She narrowed her eyes and smacked his arm. “You know what things. Love. Marriage.”
“It does? I had no idea.”
“Luke!” she said, exasperated, but it only made him laugh harder.
He bent down, his face level with hers, and whispered, “Is there something you’re trying to ask me, sunflower?”
She bit her lip and her gaze heated before it slid away from his. He brought it back with a gentle squeeze of her chin.
“I called you my wife because that’s how I think of you. You are my mate, the other half of my soul. You delight me, you drive me crazy, and I know now that the reason fate made me immortal was to meet you. I may have called you that word in the heat of the moment, but that’s because it’s how I feel. My intentions are to marry you one day, my vicious little sunflower, and if you’re asking my feelings for you, well…” He smirked. “Yes, I love you.”
She gasped, her eyes growing wide at the confession, but it was him who was shocked when her mouth, seconds before in a perfect little “O”, pressed against his.
Luke had imagined kissing Johanna more times than he could count. He fantasized about how soft and warm her lips would be, how delicious she would taste, the soft noise she would make when he parted her lips with his tongue. He craved the way she’d sigh into his arms and moan in her pleasure. What he had never imagined, though, was that she would kiss him first.
