Released in 1969, One Step On is the audacious debut of British organ-rock trio Jody Grind, led by keyboard virtuoso Tim Hinkley. The album opens with an 18-minute suite blending original compositions with a bold cover of "Paint It Black," showcasing the band's flair for extended jams and dynamic shifts. Guitarist Ivan Zagni and drummer Barry Wilson round out the original lineup, delivering tight, expressive performances that fuse jazz, blues, and proto-prog elements. The record's eclecticism is it's strength-moving from the introspective "Little Message" to the bluesy grit of "U.S.A." and the rollicking "Rock'n'Roll Man." Hinkley's Hammond organ drives the sound, channeling the spirit of The Nice and Brian Auger while carving out it's own sonic identity. With arrangements by Dee Palmer and bass contributions from Louis Cennamo, the album boasts a rich, layered production. One Step On is a hidden gem for collectors of late- 60s progressive rock, offering both musical sophistication and raw energy. It remains a cult favorite among vinyl enthusiasts. For fans of Colosseum, early King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster, this is a must-spin. Jody Grind may have been short-lived, but One Step On is a lasting testament to their creative fire.
