Digitally remastered and expanded edition. No one in the New York crossover metal scene could make a guy laugh like Carnivore front man Pete Steele. Whether it was the vomit-in-the-toilet track "Jack Daniels and Pizza," which opened the band's second album Retaliation or the crudely drawn obscene Sharpie renderings Steele would scribble on passed out musicians and crew members. Steele was a one of a kind and his perverse, oddball sense of humor infiltrated and enhanced his viciously aggressive blend of hardcore and metal. Just take two of Retaliation's many standouts, "Angry Neurotic Catholics" and "S.M.D. (Suck My Dick)." "For Retaliation, I really wanted to make an album that was half Black Sabbath-type metal and half ripping hardcore," he said before the album's original release in 1987. "I just loved that vibe, so I incorporated the slowness and heavy dirge sound with the incredible energy of bands like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and Sheer Terror." More than 30 years after it's release, Retaliation still stands as a landmark achievement in crossover music and another indication of Pete Steele's immense gift for songwriting, a talent he would demonstrate time and again between 1991 and 2007 with Type O Negative. Here comes the 2018 reissue with the original cover, bonus tracks and new liner notes by Jon Wiederhorn.
