The complete two-volume proceedings of the Third Symposium on Salt, a major international scientific meeting held in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1969 devoted to the geology, chemistry, engineering, extraction, and technological uses of natural salt deposits.
Edited by geologists Jon L. Rau and Louis F. Dellwig and published by the Northern Ohio Geological Society in 1970, this substantial first-edition set contains nearly 1,000 pages of technical research spanning the rapidly developing fields of evaporite geology and underground engineering.
Volume One covers stratigraphy and sedimentation, geochemistry, tectonics, solution mining, and underground storage and disposal. Its papers examine the formation of major salt and evaporite deposits, saline basins, brines, potash resources, solution-mining techniques, and the use of underground salt formations for engineered storage.
Of particular historical significance is research associated with Project Salt Vault, one of the United States' earliest major experiments investigating the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in deep geological salt formations. The volume includes Results of the Operation of Project Salt Vault, documenting work that became an important precursor to later research into permanent geological repositories for nuclear waste.
Volume Two turns toward the engineering and industrial sciences of salt, with sections covering evaporated and solar salt, economics, industrial applications, rock physics and mechanics, subsidence, geophysics, hydraulic fracturing, and mining. Its papers document the growing use of geophysical instrumentation and rock-mechanics research to understand and engineer large underground salt structures.
Together, the volumes offer a detailed snapshot of salt science at a transitional moment when evaporite deposits were increasingly viewed not simply as mineral resources, but as complex geological systems capable of supporting underground mines, storage caverns, experimental waste repositories, and other engineered structures.
The set also retains distinctive Pan American Petroleum Corporation Research Center Geological Library provenance, including institutional stamps, catalog markings, and spine labels. These markings place the books within the large corporate research-library networks that played an important role in mid-20th-century American geological research.

Lightly Played condition cards can have slight border or corner wear, or possibly minor scratches. No major defects are present, and there are less than 4 total flaws on the card. Lightly Played condition foils may have slight fading or indications of wear on the card face. '

'Moderately Played (MP)'
Moderately Played condition cards have moderate wear, or flaws apparent to the naked eye. Moderately Played condition cards can show moderate border wear, mild corner wear, water damage, scratches , creases or fading, light dirt buildup, or any combination of these defects. '

'Heavily Played (HP)'
Heavily Played condition cards exhibit signs of heavy wear. Heavily Played condition cards may include cards that have significant creasing, folding, severe water damage, heavy whitening, heavy border wear, and /or tearing. '

'Damaged (D)'
Damaged condition cards show obvious tears, bends, or creases that could make the card illegal for tournament play, even when sleeved. Damaged condition cards have massive border wear, possible writing or major inking (ex. white-bordered cards with black-markered front borders), massive corner wear, prevalent scratching, folds, creases or tears. '
